The Black-capped Chickadee Is Correct!
Did you know?Did you know? The Black-capped Chickadee (state bird of Maine and Massachusetts) has a highly complex set of vocalizations that can communicate different types of information, ranging from threats from predators to coordinating group movement. A recent study showed that the number of "dees" in a chickadee call indicates the level of threat from nearby predators. For example, a more dangerous predator would cause more "dees" in the call than a less dangerous predator. In one case, a warning call about a pygmy owl, a prime threat to chickadees, contained 23 "dees." Call hint: Chickadees sound like they are saying their name — "chicka dee dee dee" — and sometimes sound like they are saying "cheese burger". « Return to Bird Quiz |
