The Common Loon (Minnesota's state bird) is a highly devoted parent. Both male and female work to build the nest, share in sitting on eggs, and feeding the young. Parents are also often seen carting chicks on their backs as they swim. Sadly, these birds have disappeared from some lakes in eastern North America due to the effects of acid rain and pollution as well as lead poisoning from lead sinkers used by fishermen.
